SQE2 Case and Matter Analysis
Share
The Case and Matter Analysis in SQE2 is a computer-based written assessment designed to test your ability to analyse a legal problem and provide clear, client-focused advice. In this task, you are presented with a case study and supporting documents that simulate a real-world legal scenario. The task is to draft a written report to a partner, offering a legal analysis of the case and practical recommendations tailored to the client’s objectives.
You are given 60 minutes to complete the exercise in the context of Business Law and Practice, Criminal Practice, Dispute Resolution, Property Practice, or Wills and the Administration of Estates. During this time, you must carefully review the documents provided, identify the relevant facts, and determine the legal and practical issues at stake. The report should demonstrate a clear understanding of the client’s concerns and priorities, and advice must be framed from the client’s perspective, not merely from a legal or technical standpoint.
The assessment places a strong emphasis on legal reasoning and communication skills. The written report must be clear, concise, and professionally worded. You are expected to use accurate legal language while maintaining readability for a senior solicitor. The tone should reflect the formality and precision expected in professional internal communications within a law firm.
In terms of legal application, you must apply the relevant legal principles correctly and comprehensively to the client’s situation. This includes identifying the appropriate law, applying it to the facts of the case, and drawing conclusions that lead to actionable advice. If the scenario involves any ethical or professional conduct issues, these should be recognised and addressed in the report, with clear judgment shown in how to manage them appropriately and ethically.
Additionally, where applicable, you may propose options and strategies for the client, such as negotiation, settlement, or further steps to progress the matter. These should be realistic and aligned with the client’s goals.
