MPRE Scores

After you have completed the MPRE, NCBE evaluates the results and reports the scores both to you and to your designated jurisdictions. MPRE scores are reported on a scaled score range from 50 to 150, with higher scores reflecting stronger performance on the examination. Each jurisdiction that requires the MPRE establishes its own minimum passing score, so you must verify the score requirement for the state or jurisdiction in which they intend to seek admission to the bar.

Release of MPRE Scores
MPRE scores are typically released within approximately five weeks after the examination date. Once available, the score report is posted in your NCBE Account File Cabinet, where it can be accessed online. You are responsible for checking your accounts to retrieve your results. However, MPRE scores remain accessible in the NCBE account only until the next MPRE administration. For example, a candidate who takes the MPRE in March will be able to view the score in the NCBE account only until the August administration. Because access is limited, you should download or save your score report while it is available. If you need to obtain a score after it is no longer available in the NCBE account, you must request an MPRE Unofficial Score Transcript through MPRE Score Services.

Reporting MPRE Scores to Jurisdictions
During the MPRE registration process, you are asked to designate a jurisdiction to receive your score report. NCBE automatically sends the score to the selected jurisdiction after the exam results are released. If you later decide to apply to a different jurisdiction or wish to send your score to additional jurisdictions, you may request additional MPRE Score Reports through MPRE Score Services. These additional reports typically require a separate fee. Because most U.S. jurisdictions require a passing MPRE score as part of the bar admission process, the MPRE plays an important role in demonstrating your knowledge of professional responsibility rules. You should review the required passing score for your jurisdiction and plan your preparation accordingly.

How the MPRE Is Scored?
Although the MPRE contains 60 multiple-choice questions, only 50 questions are scored, while the remaining 10 questions are unscored pretest questions used for future exam development. The number of questions answered correctly is referred to as the raw score. However, you do not receive your raw score. Instead, the raw score is converted into a scaled score ranging from 50 to 150. NCBE uses a statistical process known as equating to calculate scaled scores. Equating adjusts scores to account for differences in difficulty among different versions of the exam administered at different times. Because each test administration may contain questions of varying difficulty, equating ensures that the scaled score represents the same level of knowledge and performance regardless of when the exam is taken. As a result of this process, it is not possible to determine in advance exactly how many questions must be answered correctly to achieve a particular scaled score. The conversion between raw scores and scaled scores depends on the difficulty of the specific exam administered during that testing period.
